  • Practical Skills in IGCSE Marine Science

You don’t actually need any prior Marine Science knowledge for this block, making it accessible for new learners too. However, it is brilliant preparation for anyone planning to sit the Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science exam in the future, as practical and investigative skills run throughout the course and are essential for exam success.

This practical-skills-focused Marine Science block is probably one of the MOST requested blocks I’ve never actually taught before, because practical and investigation questions are an area so many students struggle with in the Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science exam.

Many students know the science itself… but lose marks when it comes to planning investigations, interpreting graphs, evaluating methods, analysing data or writing conclusions that actually answer the question and score marks.

This block is designed to tackle exactly that.

Through marine-themed practicals and investigations, we will build confidence with the investigative, analytical and data-handling skills needed throughout the course - and most importantly, we’ll link every practical skill back to what it could look like in a real exam scenario, so students understand not just what to do, but how examiners ask about it.

Through engaging marine-themed investigations and activities, students will learn how to:

    🧪 Plan fair tests

📊 Record and present results clearly

    📈 Draw and interpret graphs

🎯 Understand accuracy, precision and reliability

🧠 Analyse data and spot patterns

✏️ Write stronger scientific conclusions and evaluations

🌊 Apply practical skills specifically within a Marine Science context

    This is ideal for:

✔️ Students preparing for future IGCSE Marine Science exams

✔️ Learners who lack confidence with investigations or graph skills

✔️ Students who enjoy the practical side of science

✔️ Home-educated learners wanting more hands-on scientific thinking skills

The aim is not just to memorise science… but to think like a scientist.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students will be able to:

🔬 Identify independent, dependent and control variables in investigations

🧪 Plan valid scientific investigations linked to Marine Science topics

📏 Select suitable apparatus and methods for collecting data

📋 Record observations and results clearly and accurately

📊 Present data using appropriate tables, graphs and charts

📈 Interpret patterns and trends in experimental data

🎯 Explain the difference between accuracy, precision and reliability

🧠 Evaluate investigations and identify sources of error and improvements

✏️ Write evidence-based scientific conclusions using their data

🌊 Apply investigative and analytical skills within a Marine Science context

    Specialist Resources Needed

Some activities may involve science-based or more specialist equipment; however, families will not be expected to purchase expensive resources, as I can demonstrate these live during the sessions.

Wherever possible, I will suggest simple, low-cost or household alternatives so students can still take part practically at home if they wish.

Printable worksheets and investigation planning resources will also be provided.

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!

“So glad that I came across the £2 Tuition Hub by chance last year, it has had a huge impact on my child’s life. He has for the first time had access to varied, age-appropriate lessons, with fantastic teachers who always make him feel included and valued.”

Louise, parent

“As well as being amazed at the range of lessons available on the hub, I have been delighted to find that the teachers have all been not only knowledgeable, but so friendly, kind and encouraging to all the learners. The lessons are calm and non-stressful, just what my child needs. Thank you to everyone at the hub.”

Hub parent

“We have been studying with the hub for many years now and both my boys have really appreciated the variety of courses available and the wonderfully inspiring teachers you have. We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent

“Very grateful for all your hard work, and thankful for all your help during these 4 years (can't believe it's been so long) - you don't know and I can't express in words how much pressure you take of our shoulders with this amazing palette of classes that you offer.”

Cristiana, parent

“I've recommended so many people to the hub, you guys have revolutionised home ed for us. Literally. After building up our confidence with using the hub, I've actually been able to take on work based back out in the community while my daughter is at home studying. Thanks for everything you are doing! ”

Tina, parent

“A massive thankyou for all you do at the £2 hub, we have been with you from the start and seen you grow but this is the first time we have done GCSE exams with you, and with great results! Thanks ”

Hub parent

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”
