- Phase 5 alternative graphemes and common exception words In Phase 5, we will revisit consonant blends for reading and writing, alongside common exception (tricky) words learnt so far. We will introduce the alternative graphemes ay, oe, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue and aw, alongside introducing the common exception words Mr, Mrs, their, oh and people. We will use our knowledge of these alternative graphemes and common exception words to practise reading and writing words and sentences.
