  • Description: Mechanical Cam Toy - AKA Automata Story STEAM will turn into a toy workshop in this project where participants will design and make a cam toy* with moving objects and/or characters from a favourite story. Participants will have the opportunity to investigate cam mechanisms and discover how different shaped cams can alter the movement of the follower. *Cam toys (aka automata) use hand-powered mechanisms to create cyclical motions that animate a scene. Materials needed: * Paper * Different shaped cams * Thick card * Dowelling * Thick card or MDF discs * Craft materials * Ready cut square section wood to make a sturdy frame OR a small cardboard box. Equipment: * Pencil * Scissors * Glue Optional: Examples of cam toys A kit will be available to pre order. Please email [email protected] (Limited availability so please get in touch ASAP). S - Science: Investigate how the shape of a cam affects the motion of the follower T - Technology: Design and make a cam toy E - Engineering: Learn about cam mechanisms A - Art: Select materials and create a pleasing finish to their toy M - Maths: Measure accurately / Geometry Participants will have the opportunity to: * use research and develop a design criteria * generate ideas through discussion, drawings and prototypes * understand and use cam mechanisms in their toy design * use tools and equipment for cutting, shaping, joining and finishing accurately * use a range of materials and components according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities * evaluate their finished cam toy against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work
