  • Learning Show Description

    Pack your explorer bag, grab your history detective notebook and prepare to travel back in time... because we're heading deep into the rainforests of ancient Mesoamerica! 🌎🌴

    In our new Learning Show, children will uncover the incredible world of the ancient Maya through maps, mysteries, timelines, investigations, secret symbols... and even CHOCOLATE!

    We'll track down the Maya on a map and discover where their ancient civilisation would be found in today's world. We'll travel through thousands of years of history, piecing together important events on our giant Maya timeline. We'll become history detectives, using books, websites, images and historical evidence to uncover clues about Maya cities, rulers, beliefs and everyday life. We'll investigate mysterious Maya codices and glyphs and discover how this remarkable civilisation recorded its ideas and knowledge.

    We're making Maya-inspired HOT CHOCOLATE! We'll discover why cacao was so important to Maya culture before creating and tasting our own Maya-inspired drink. Along the way there'll be challenges, investigations, discussions, quizzes and plenty of opportunities for children to share their discoveries.

    While they're busy exploring, investigating, decoding and creating, children will also be working towards the objectives from the AQA Entry Level unit: An Introduction to the Ancient Mayans.

  • Course Objectives

    In successfully completing this unit, the learner will have demonstrated the ability to

    1. identify Mesoamerica on a map, globe or atlas

    2. compare the location of ancient Mayan civilisations to the modern day Americas

    3. order on a time line at least four important dates in the history of ancient Maya

    4. contribute to a discussion about ancient Mayan civilisations

    5. use at least two different media, eg books, internet, to find out about key moments in the history of the ancient Mayans

    shown knowledge of

    6. the ancient Mayan codices and the Mayan alphabet

    experienced

    7. making hot chocolate to a recipe inspired by ancient Mayan civilisations.

Hiya everyone, I’m Stacey. I’m a primary school teacher from Nottinghamshire.
Currently I teach year 6 and have done for the last 6 years as once you’re in they don’t tend to let you out. 😂 I have also taught in years 3 and 5. The best part about my job is watching those lightbulb moments where children just get it! I love watching them grow in confidence from the beginning to the end of a lesson!
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and taking my Spanish rescue dog , Lila, on long treks through the woods! We’ve found many deer but never any bears on our hunts!
