  • Block 5

    This block build on the learning in previous blocks.

    In this block, learners focus on building confidence in using British Sign Language to communicate clearly with others. Rather than learning lots of new topics, this block helps learners develop the skills needed to put signs together into meaningful sentences and conversations in BSL.

    Learners will explore everyday themes such as food, making simple plans, and talking with friends, while also strengthening their watching and understanding skills through short signed stories and interactive activities.

    This block is designed to help learners move from knowing signs to using BSL as a language, giving them opportunities to practise conversation and understand longer pieces of signing in a fun and supportive environment.

  • Course Objectives:

    Use BSL to talk about food and snacks, expressing simple preferences

    Build clear, structured BSL sentences using basic word order

    Use time markers and sequencing to organise simple ideas

    Understand the main ideas in a short signed narrative

    Respond to simple questions about signed information

    Make simple plans using time, place, and activity signs

    Use strategies such as asking for repetition or clarification when communication breaks down

BSL Tutor & KS3 Topic Tutor

Hi! I’m AJ and I’m a qualified primary school teacher who has been teaching and tutoring Nursery-Year 9 since 2015! Time flies when you’re having fun! I started my teaching career in mainstream, where I taught a boy who had recently lost his hearing. I was passionate about ensuring no child was left behind and so I enrolled in sign language classes. After teaching the entire school BSL and raising awareness for sign language, I just knew I needed to be a Teacher of the Deaf. And what do you know? I now teach in a Deaf school in London, using BSL all day everyday. My class pop up on the BBC quite often! I am fully qualified to Level 3 BSL but intend to go further, when I have a minute!

  • How do I access the live sessions?

    You will receive a confirmation email from Zoom, containing details of your live registration.

    You will also have a reminder one hour before the start of each class.

    The live session can be accessed from the 'Join Webinar' button in these emails.

  • I've missed a session, can I have the recording?

    All recordings are uploaded within 24 hours to here - your dashboard - so you can watch whenever is convenient.
