Content

  • Hobbies, Interests and Description

This block builds on the previous learning in blocks 1, 2 and 3.

In this block, learners develop their ability to use British Sign Language to talk about everyday interests, choices, and the world around them. Building on previous blocks, the focus moves from describing people and places to expressing what learners enjoy, what they want, and how they describe things- all in age-appropriate, meaningful contexts.

This block helps learners move beyond single signs and into clear, structured communication, supporting both confidence and fluency in real-life situations.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, learners will be able to:

Use BSL to talk about hobbies and interests

Name and describe animals and pets

Use adjectives to describe people, animals, and objects

Express wants and needs, including “don’t want” and “don’t need”

Use like, dislike, and favourite to express preferences

Combine description and opinion into short structured signed phrases

Communicate choices clearly using facial expression and body language

Tutor

AJ .

BSL Tutor & KS3 Topic Tutor

Hi! I’m AJ and I’m a qualified primary school teacher who has been teaching and tutoring Nursery-Year 9 since 2015! Time flies when you’re having fun! I started my teaching career in mainstream, where I taught a boy who had recently lost his hearing. I was passionate about ensuring no child was left behind and so I enrolled in sign language classes. After teaching the entire school BSL and raising awareness for sign language, I just knew I needed to be a Teacher of the Deaf. And what do you know? I now teach in a Deaf school in London, using BSL all day everyday. My class pop up on the BBC quite often! I am fully qualified to Level 3 BSL but intend to go further, when I have a minute!
