  • Foundations Revisited: Thinking in BSL!

This block is designed as a refresher of the core vocabulary and language structures taught during the Wednesday BSL course on The £2 Tuition Hub. It also provides an accessible starting point for new learners who are confident learning in a fully immersive, voice-free environment.

By the end of the block, all learners will have a shared foundation before progressing into more advanced BSL.

Welcome to BSL Voices Off: a unique British Sign Language experience taught entirely without spoken English! Whether you've completed the original BSL course on The £2 Tuition Hub or you're joining us with some previous signing experience, this opening block revisits the essential foundations of British Sign Language in a fun, immersive and engaging way.

Together we'll refresh key vocabulary, sentence structure and everyday conversations while strengthening receptive skills, fingerspelling and confidence. By the end of the block, you'll be ready to continue your BSL journey through increasingly natural signing and visual communication.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, learners will be able to:

Confidently introduce themselves using British Sign Language.

Refresh key Level 1 vocabulary including family, food, hobbies, animals, places, transport and daily life.

Recognise and use common BSL sentence structures.

Improve receptive skills by following longer pieces of signed information.

    Increase fingerspelling speed and confidence.

Develop a greater understanding of facial expression and non-manual features.

Begin thinking in BSL rather than translating directly from English.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

    No specialist resources are required.

    Learners will benefit from:

A device with a large screen where possible.

A quiet space with room to practise signing.

A notebook for recording new vocabulary (optional).

A webcam if joining live and wishing to participate.

AJ .

BSL Tutor

Hi! I’m AJ and I’m a qualified primary school teacher who has been teaching and tutoring Nursery-Year 9 since 2015!
Time flies when you’re having fun! I started my teaching career in mainstream, where I taught a boy who had recently lost his hearing. I was passionate about ensuring no child was left behind and so I enrolled in sign language classes.
After teaching the entire school BSL and raising awareness for sign language, I just knew I needed to be a Teacher of the Deaf. And what do you know? I now teach in a Deaf school in London, using BSL all day everyday. My class pop up on the BBC quite often! I am fully qualified to Level 3 BSL but intend to go further, when I have a minute!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

“Thank you so much for everything!! You have been an absolute life saver. There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

Ruth, parent

We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent
