  • Foundations Revisited: Everyday Life

This block continues to consolidate core BSL foundations while extending learners' vocabulary into practical everyday situations.

Learners will develop vocabulary linked to food and drink, places and transport, weather and clothing, time, money and everyday routines. New vocabulary will continually be combined with language from Block 1, allowing learners to describe themselves and others, express preferences, ask and answer questions, give simple information and take part in increasingly sustained signed conversations.

As the course remains fully voices-off, learners will continue to develop receptive skills by watching signed instructions, questions, descriptions and short narratives without relying on spoken English.

BSL sentence structure, question forms, facial expression, non-manual features, use of space and fingerspelling will be embedded throughout the block rather than taught as isolated grammar topics.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of the block, learners will:

Develop and confidently use a wider range of everyday BSL vocabulary.
Recall and reuse vocabulary taught during Block 1 within new contexts.
Communicate about food, drink, places, transport, weather, clothing, routines, time and money.
Express simple preferences and opinions using signs such as LIKE, DON'T-LIKE, LOVE, FAVOURITE and WHY.
Ask and respond to a growing range of questions including WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO, WHICH, HOW-MANY and WHY.
Begin to link several pieces of information together rather than responding with single signs.
Develop awareness of natural BSL word order rather than relying on English sentence structure.
Use appropriate facial expression and non-manual features to support meaning and questions.
Improve receptive understanding of signed sentences, descriptions and short conversations.
Use fingerspelling appropriately when vocabulary is unknown or when communicating names and places.
Develop confidence maintaining short voices-off conversations with another signer.
Increase independence when working out meaning from context rather than immediately requiring clarification.

Tutor

AJ .

BSL Tutor

Hi! I’m AJ and I’m a qualified primary school teacher who has been teaching and tutoring Nursery-Year 9 since 2015!
Time flies when you’re having fun! I started my teaching career in mainstream, where I taught a boy who had recently lost his hearing. I was passionate about ensuring no child was left behind and so I enrolled in sign language classes.
After teaching the entire school BSL and raising awareness for sign language, I just knew I needed to be a Teacher of the Deaf. And what do you know? I now teach in a Deaf school in London, using BSL all day everyday. My class pop up on the BBC quite often! I am fully qualified to Level 3 BSL but intend to go further, when I have a minute!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
