Content

  • Particles, Atomic Structure, Bonding and the Periodic Table (Part 1)

This block can be studied as a stand-alone introduction to IGCSE Chemistry and does not require students to have completed any previous Chemistry blocks. However, it assumes learners have a basic understanding of science equivalent to Key Stage 3 (or similar).

Fundamental concepts such as particles, elements, compounds, mixtures and atomic structure underpin many later Chemistry topics, making this an ideal starting point for the course.

What do fireworks, fizzy drinks, helium balloons and the pencil in your hand all have in common? They're all made from tiny particles too small to see!

In this exciting 6-week IGCSE Chemistry block, students will uncover the building blocks of matter and discover how everything around us is made from atoms.

We'll explore the fascinating world of particles, elements, compounds and mixtures, investigate the structure of the atom, and learn how the Periodic Table organises over 100 different elements into a powerful scientific tool.

Along the way, students will make predictions, spot patterns and begin to understand why different substances behave the way they do.

Expect plenty of hands-on learning, including memorable demonstrations, practical investigations, model building and interactive activities to bring abstract concepts to life.

With regular Kahoot quizzes, exam-style questions woven throughout and lots of opportunities to connect Chemistry to everyday life, this block provides a fun, engaging and confidence-building introduction to IGCSE Chemistry.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students should be able to:

Describe the arrangement, movement and energy of particles in solids, liquids and gases.

Explain changes of state and diffusion using the particle model.

Distinguish between elements, compounds and mixtures, giving examples of each.

Describe the structure of an atom in terms of protons, neutrons and electrons.

State the relative charges and locations of subatomic particles.

Define atomic number and mass number and use them to describe atoms and isotopes.

Explain what isotopes are and recognise that they have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.

Use the Periodic Table to identify elements and describe its organisation into groups and periods.

Recognise the difference between metals and non-metals and describe some of their general properties.

Write and interpret simple electronic structures for the first 20 elements.

Develop confidence in using scientific vocabulary and applying knowledge to exam-style questions and practical contexts.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

A detailed equipment list will be provided before the block begins, along with suggested alternatives where appropriate.

Most activities use simple, inexpensive household items that families are likely to already have access to, such as basic stationery, clear containers and everyday kitchen materials. Occasionally, learners may benefit from having access to molecular model kits or a Periodic Table, but these are not essential, as live demonstrations will be provided throughout.

Learners will also need access to the course worksheets, which will be available on the dashboard. Please don’t worry if you don’t have specific items - suitable substitutions will always be suggested, and students can still fully participate by watching the demonstrations.

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.
I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.
My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.
Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:
👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors
👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists
👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers
👨🏻‍💻 Innovators
👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers
👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists
👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators
More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

“Thank you so much for everything!! You have been an absolute life saver. There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

Ruth, parent

“Your support and guidance is always valuable and appreciated, keep it up! ”

Gina, parent

“So glad that I came across the £2 Tuition Hub by chance last year, it has had a huge impact on my child’s life. He has for the first time had access to varied, age-appropriate lessons, with fantastic teachers who always make him feel included and valued.”

Louise, parent

“As well as being amazed at the range of lessons available on the hub, I have been delighted to find that the teachers have all been not only knowledgeable, but so friendly, kind and encouraging to all the learners. The lessons are calm and non-stressful, just what my child needs. Thank you to everyone at the hub.”

Hub parent

“We have been studying with the hub for many years now and both my boys have really appreciated the variety of courses available and the wonderfully inspiring teachers you have. We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent
