  • Dark Tourism - Crime, Death and the Places People Visit

    Why do millions of people travel to places connected to tragedy, crime, and death?

    From abandoned prisons and disaster zones to serial‑killer walking tours and infamous crime scenes, this block dives into the strange, fascinating world of dark tourism and what our attraction to these places reveals about society, psychology, and ourselves.

    Learners will explore how locations marked by violence or suffering become tourist destinations, how the media shapes their appeal, and whether dark tourism helps us remember history or risks exploiting it. Through real‑world case studies, ethical debates, and interactive analysis, students will uncover the blurred lines between education, entertainment, and exploitation.

    Designed to be provocative, reflective, and visually engaging, this block invites learners to question why we are drawn to the darker side of travel and what responsibilities we have when we visit these places.

  • Course Objectives:

    Analyse why people engage in dark tourism and evaluate the psychological, cultural, and social factors that drive its appeal.

    Critically examine real‑world dark tourism sites, assessing how history, crime, and tragedy are presented - and who controls the narrative.

    Evaluate the ethical debates surrounding dark tourism, including exploitation, memorialisation, commercialisation, and the responsibilities of visitors.

Business IGCSE, Law, Criminology Tutor

Hello! I’m Carla and I teach a variety of Secondary Social Science sessions in the Hub. These currently includes Business, Law and Criminology. I am a Freelance Educator who enjoys a variety of roles. My most recent role outside of the Hub has been a Deputy Headteacher which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I am also an Educational Advisor for Claire House and examiner with a leading exam board. I have almost 20 years’ teaching experience and have led the pastoral care of students for the vast majority of my career. I have vast experience of leading Alternative Provision within the secondary system and that is why I adore the Hub and our learners within it soooooo much. I am based close to my home city of Liverpool, have three children and two cats. I love music and always start my sessions with a song whilst everyone is joining. During my free time you will find me exploring the UK and France in our caravan. Hope to see you soon in one of my sessions.
