  • The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

    "To be born, or at any rate bred, in a hand-bag, whether it had handles or not, seems to me to display a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life that reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution."

    "The Importance of Being Earnest" is a witty and playful comedy by Oscar Wilde that explores the contrast between appearance and reality in Victorian society. First performed in 1895, the play is a sparkling example of Wilde’s talent for satire, using humor, irony, and clever dialogue to gently mock social conventions, especially those surrounding marriage, class, and identity.

    The story follows two fashionable young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who invent false identities in order to escape social obligations and pursue romance. Their deceptions lead to a series of misunderstandings and humorous complications, particularly when both men pretend to be named “Ernest” to win the affection of the women they love. Through these exaggerated situations, Wilde highlights the absurdity of rigid social expectations and the hypocrisy that often lies beneath respectable appearances.

    NOTE: This play will be studied over TWO blocks. This is Block 1 of 2.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
