    We finalise our reading of The Sign of the Four, featuring the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes and when we’ve finished, we will also consider other works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Published in 1890, the book delves deeper into the brilliant yet eccentric character of Holmes and his loyal friend, Dr John Watson. The story is set in Victorian London and revolves around a complex mystery involving a secret pact, stolen treasure, and betrayal. The narrative begins when Mary Morstan seeks Holmes' help to solve the mystery of her missing father and the strange annual gifts of pearls she has been receiving. This case soon spirals into a thrilling adventure that intertwines an exotic backstory from colonial India with the gripping chase through London's foggy streets and waterways. With themes of greed, justice, and loyalty, The Sign of the Four showcases Conan Doyle’s masterful storytelling and offers a deeper exploration of Holmes' deductive genius and Watson's personal life. This is a GCSE set text for AQA English Literature and so we will be considering exam past papers as part of our studies.

    Please note: this is Block 3 of 3 for the Sherlock Holmes stories. You need to have done Blocks 1 and 2 before starting this one.

I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
