Content

  • "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw. This is Block 1 of 3. Subsequent blocks will require purchase of this one first. “German and Spanish are accessible to foreigners: English is not accessible even to Englishmen.” ― George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion Our Classics text for September 2024 is, for the first time, a play. We are going to be studying “Pygmalion”, which may be better known as the film “My Fair Lady”. "Pygmalion" is a play by George Bernard Shaw, first performed in 1913.

  • The play is a social commentary on class and the power of language and transformation, wrapped in a comedic narrative. It tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, who makes a bet with his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a poor flower girl with a strong Cockney accent, into a lady who could pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party. NOTE: This play will be studied over THREE blocks. This is Block 1 of 3. As part of our studies, we will develop our understanding of character and context and focus on language and structure, as well as stagecraft. We will also watch some relevant film clips.

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”

Holly, Parent

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

Donna, Parent

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”
