  • Description: Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Our classic text this time is much older than our usual Georgian or Victorian novels from the 1800s and 1900s – we are in fact going back to the thirteenth century, to meet a diverse group of characters on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. Welcome to The Canterbury Tales, as told by Geoffrey Chaucer. The Tales are a collection of stories, apparently told by a range of storytellers, with very different characters and from very different social backgrounds. Chaucer imagines that the group is setting off from the Tabard Inn in London to the Shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury, a journey of four days. On the way, in order to make the journey pass more pleasantly, the pilgrims tell each other stories. We will be looking at the way Chaucer describes the characters and tells their stories – both in Middle English and Modern English. We will learn about the development of the English Language and how it evolved to what it is today. All resources will be provided. L/O: To learn about the development of the English Language, to consider how characters are created and how narratives are structured. To learn about a canonical text.
