Candidates are required to write an essay, worth 20% of the final IGCSE grade, responding to a question about a theme in one of the poems. Not only does the essay need to show understanding of the idea in the poem, but also the poetic techniques used to create effects. Some contextual knowledge is helpful, but the main focus will be on structure and language, using all appropriate subject terminology. The technical aspects of all five poems have been covered in previous Poetry blocks on the Hub. This block puts together all five recordings into a block together, allowing students to undertake preparation work before learning how to write about the poems for exam purposes during live lessons. The session on each poem should be completed prior to the live session. The live sessions will be completed in anthology order. Students who have undertaken the Poetry Sessions will already have these resources (PowerPoint and recordings) and do not need to purchase this supporting block. To understand the poems in the IGCSE English Language anthology, learning about structure, mood, imagery, language and considering the effect on the reader.
