  • BUILDS ON PREVIOUS BLOCKS. Description: Love and Loss (continued). We are continuing our study of poems written about love and loss in this poetry block, following our previous block. There will be a range of heritage and contemporary poems. This theme is being spread over two blocks as it is a huge topic and is the focus of some of the GCSE anthologies. You will be presented with ten new poems, five for each of the two blocks and after looking at the new poem, we will return to one studied in previous blocks to show how poetry can be multi-themed. There is no need to have completed previous blocks. You will be given an anthology of the ten poems on your dashboard which you can download as a booklet or week by week. We will be using the SMILE structure to analyse poetic techniques – structure, mood and meaning, imagery, language and effect on the reader. We will also learn about the poet and the context in which they wrote their poetry. Many of the poems feature in current GCSE and IGCSE specifications. L/O: To understand how structure, mood, imagery and language create meaning and have an effect on the reader. To understand the context in which literary heritage and contemporary poems are written.
