  • BLOCK 1 OF 2 – Shakespeare – “Twelfth Night”. “If music be the food of love, play on. Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken and so die.”

  • Viola and Sebastian are twins, separated by a shipwreck. Landing on Illyria, Viola disguises herself as her brother and goes into the service of Duke Orsino. When the Duke sends her to help him win the Lady Olivia, the obstacles of unrequited love, self deceit and mistaken identity soon lead an assortment of lovers on a merry dance. Perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare’s comedies, Twelfth Night considers the nature of love, true love, self love and friendship. This play consists of five Acts and in order to be able to cover as much of it as possible, we are covering it over two blocks with a total of ten sessions, with a mixture of film clips, script reading and discussion about language, themes and characters. The script is freely available online.

Hello! I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
