Content

  • SPAG Skills

This practical five-week block focuses on the spelling, punctuation, grammar and proofreading skills students need to produce clear and accurate writing in Functional Skills English Level 1.

Rather than memorising complicated grammatical terminology, we will concentrate on USING the skills students need in their own writing. We'll revisit essential punctuation including capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks and apostrophes, alongside spelling strategies, sentence accuracy, tense consistency and paragraphing.

A major focus throughout the block will be proofreading. Students will learn how to spot common mistakes, correct poorly written responses and develop a simple checking routine they can use independently. Dedicated proofreading challenges in Weeks 3, 4 and 5 will gradually move from supported error-spotting to independently checking exam-style writing.

This block is ideal for students working towards Functional Skills English Level 1 or learners who understand many of the rules already but need greater confidence applying them consistently when writing under pressure.

  • Course Objectives:

To use essential punctuation and grammar accurately to create clear, complete sentences.
To improve spelling accuracy and develop strategies for checking unfamiliar and commonly confused words.
To use punctuation accurately and appropriately within Functional Skills writing.
To organise writing into clear, logical paragraphs and guide the reader through ideas effectively.
To independently proofread, edit and improve a Functional Skills writing response.

Amy L

English Tutor

Hi everyone! I’m Amy and I’ve been a private tutor since 2020.
I previously worked as a teacher where I taught in almost every year you can think of! I’ve worked in mainstream, independent and special schools.
I’m passionate about every child being able to access an education that is right for them and I’m excited to be a part of that!
During my time as a teacher, I worked with students with very high anxiety and as a result I’m an empathetic tutor and always aim for students to feel safe and secure in my lessons first and foremost. I also like to produce fun and engaging lessons that focus on topics that students are actually interested in!
I love travelling, reading and spending time at home with my baby, husband and dog! I also run my own greeting card company and have sold over 50,000 designs!
I am so excited to be joining the hub and to meet you all. I am a huge advocate for home education and I love what the £2 hub stands for! I hope to see in my lessons soon!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
