Content

  • Learning Show Description

Get hands-on with one of the most important organs in the human body in this fascinating and slightly messy science block.

In Heart Dissection and the Human Double Circulatory System, learners will explore how the heart works by examining a real heart, identifying key structures, and following the journey of blood around the body.

From tracing the pathway of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to understanding the role of valves and the differences between arteries and veins, this course brings human biology to life through practical investigation, movement-based learning, and clear scientific explanation.

Each session includes guided activities, discussion, and a short end-of-lesson quiz to build confidence and understanding. This block is ideal for learners who enjoy practical science, asking questions about how the body works, and learning through doing.

  • Course Objectives

By the end of this block, learners will be able to:

Locate and identify key structures of the heart, including the atria, ventricles, valves, aorta and pulmonary artery.

Demonstrate understanding through dissecting a real heart and labelling key structures.

Describe the pathway of the human double circulatory system.

Explain at least three differences between arteries and veins.

Explain the main role of valves in the heart and veins.

Identify where oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are found in the circulatory system.

    Aims of the block:

To develop practical scientific investigation skills.

To build confidence in identifying and explaining biological structures.

To strengthen understanding of how systems in the body work together.

To encourage curiosity about human biology and real-world science.

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!
