Content

  • Britain: Health the People: c1000 to the present day

This is the fourth block of the second year of a GCSE History course

GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. We continue the second year of our course this block with our final topic: Britain: Health the People: c1000 to the present day. This course is about breadth, studying change over time through a theme. The theme we will be studying is 'health' with a focus on Britain over time. As part of the theme 'health' we will study beliefs about illness and disease, cures and remedies, knowledge and understanding, the role of institutions such as the Church and government. Additionally, we will consider the impact of factors such as industrialisation, war and the role of the individual.

  • Course Objectives:

To explain the key details of the 1848 and 1875 Public Health Acts.

To evaluate the impact of the Public Health Acts on the standard of Public Health in Britain.

To consolidate the Industrial section of the Health topic by evaluating the role of different factors, revising key knowledge and practicing exam questions.

To describe the discovery of penicillin and make links between development of other antibiotics. To explain the transformative effect of antibiotics on the treatment of infection.

To consider the role of WW1 and WW2 in the development of surgery.

To explain the key features of ‘modern’ medicine in Britain - such as the development of the NHS, pharmaceutical industry and alternative treatments.

Tutor

Lily .

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub. I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools. I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online. As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.
