Content

  • In the September block we will be looking at:- Germany, 1890–1945: Democracy and dictatorship. This is the first block in the two year GCSE History course. GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. We begin our History GCSE this block with our first topic: Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship. For the next six lessons, we will focus on the growth of Democracy in Germany, considering the impact of WW1 and Kaiser Wilhelm's eventual abdication. We will study the establishment of the Weimar Republic and the ways in which German life changed under this new democratic system.

  • We will focus on the threats to the Republic from the political right and left, and evaluate how close it came to collapse through events such as hyperinflation and the Kapp Putsch. We will conclude this block by considering how far Germany experienced a 'Golden Age' in the mid 1920s and the role of the USA in Germany's economic recovery. LO1: To explain how the demand for socialism and democracy increased in Germany in the early 1900s. LO2: To evaluate the impact of WW1 on Germany and explain the downfall of the Empire and Kaiser Wilhelm II's abdication. LO3: To describe the features of Weimar Democracy and analyse the various political and economic threats to it 1918-1923. LO4: To evaluate the claim that Germany experienced a 'Golden Age' from 1924-1929.

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub. I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools. I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online. As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.
