Content

  • Elizabethan England c1568-1603

    This is the 6th block in a two year course. We introduce topic 3 of the GCSE in this block, having completed topics 1 and 2 in the 5 previous blocks.

    GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication.

    We finish the first year of our course by starting our British depth study on Elizabethan England, c1568-1603. We will begin with studying Elizabeth’s early life and evaluate the person she was when she ascended the throne age 25.

    We will learn about the methods Elizabeth used to control her vast Court, and the individuals that she put her trust in to help her rule England as a single female monarch.

    We will consider the unique difficulties she faced as a female ruler in the late 1500s, such as her relationship with parliament, rebellions, marriage and the issue of succession.

    Finally, we will conclude this block by studying Elizabethan culture, and assess the claim that Elizabethan England experienced a ‘Golden Age’.

  • Course Objectives:

    To describe Elizabeth’s experiences in early life and how these impacted her as a Queen and ruler.

    To explain the ways in which Elizabeth maintained her authority, through her Court, Parliament and Privy Council.

    To evaluate the difficulties that Elizabeth I faced as a female ruler.

    Assess the claim that Elizabethan England experienced a ‘Golden Age’.

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub. I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools. I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online. As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.
