Content

  • Elizabethan England, c1568-1603

This is the 7th block in an 11 block two year course. We are continuing with the Elizabethan topic that we started in block 6.

GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. We begin the second year of our course with continuing our study of Elizabeth I's rule.

We will study life in Elizabethan times with themes such as exploration and voyages, the rise of the gentry, fashion and theatre and finally the rise of poverty.

We will also explore the nature of Elizabeth’s Religious Settlement. Her decision to make England officially Protestant, and how this was received.

We will consider the level of support and opposition that she faced, and how far we could consider her answer to the religious question a success.

  • Course Objectives:

To describe the features of life in Elizabethan times with specific and accurate historical knowledge.

To consolidate knowledge of The Spanish Armada (Our Historic Environment section), considering its significance, impact and what it can reveal about Elizabethan society.

To describe the features of Elizabethan exploration and explain how it impacted England at home and abroad.

To analyse the causes of rising poverty in Elizabethan England and the government response to it.

To explain the nature of Elizabeth’s Religious Settlement and consider how far it was successful.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

All resources are provided in the lesson and details of optional textbooks will also be given in the lesson.

Tutor

Lily .

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub.
I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools.
I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online.
As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present.
I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle!
