Content

  • Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-1972

    Block 3

This is the third block in a two year GCSE course. During this block we will conclude our study of Germany and begin the next topic, Conflict and Tension between East and West.

GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication.

This block we will conclude our first topic: Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship by exploring Nazi persecution of particular groups, with a focus on the Jewish community and the Holocaust of 1942-1945.

We will then consider the forms of opposition to the system in Nazi Germany, from the subtle to the outright, concluding our study with some exam skills focus.

During the final three lessons of this block, we will introduce the second topic in our GCSE History course: Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-1972.

This topic focuses on the Cold War between the USA and USSR, and we will introduce the course by considering how the Cold War was born out of the Second World War.

We will examine the differing political ideologies of the USA and USSR, and the initial events in 1945 which created a sense of competition and conflict between the superpowers.

We will focus primarily on the wartime conferences and the USA's use of the atomic bomb in August 1945.

  • Course Objectives:

LO1: To evaluate the claim that the Holocaust was inevitable when the Nazi Party came to power in 1933.

LO2: To evaluate the types of opposition that existed in Nazi Germany and how effective they were.

LO3: To practice exam-style questions and recap knowledge of the Germany topic.

LO4: To explain the links between the conclusion of the Second World War and the origins of the Cold War.

LO5: To describe differing political ideologies of the USA and USSR.

LO6: To analyse the role played by the wartime conferences and use of the atomic bomb in creating the Cold War.

Tutor

Lily .

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub. I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools. I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online. As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.
