  • Germany, 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship

    Block 1

    This is the first block on a two year GCSE course.

    GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication.

    We begin our History GCSE this block with our first topic: Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship.

    For the next six lessons, we will focus on the growth of Democracy in Germany, considering the impact of WW1 and Kaiser Wilhelm's eventual abdication. We will study the establishment of the Weimar Republic and the ways in which German life changed under this new democratic system. We will focus on the threats to the Republic from the political right and left, and evaluate how close it came to collapse through events such as hyperinflation and the Kapp Putsch. We will conclude this block by considering how far Germany experienced a 'Golden Age' in the mid 1920s and the role of the USA in Germany's economic recovery.

  • Course Objectives:

    To explain how the demand for socialism and democracy increased in Germany in the early 1900s.

    To evaluate the impact of WW1 on Germany and explain the downfall of the Empire and Kaiser Wilhelm II's abdication.

    To describe the features of Weimar Democracy and analyse the various political and economic threats to it 1918-1923.

    To evaluate the claim that Germany experienced a 'Golden Age' from 1924-1929.
