  • Description: Experiences of Nazi Germany and the Origins of the Cold War. GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. This block we will conclude our first topic: Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship. We will study the combination of terror and propaganda that was used to uphold a fascist dictatorship in Germany from 1933 until 1945. We will then consider the forms of opposition to the system in Nazi Germany, from the subtle to the outright, concluding our study with some exam skills focus. During the final three lessons of this block, we will introduce the second topic in our GCSE History course: Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-1972. This topic focuses on the Cold War between the USA and USSR, and we will introduce the course by considering how the Cold War was born out of the Second World War. We will examine the differing political ideologies of the USA and USSR, and the initial events in 1945 which created a sense of competition and conflict between the superpowers. We will focus primarily on the wartime conferences and the USA's use of the atomic bomb in August 1945. L/O: LO1: To explain how the opposing tactics of terror and propaganda were used in Nazi Germany to crush opposition and freedom. LO2: To evaluate the types of opposition that existed in Nazi Germany and how effective they were. LO3: To practice exam-style questions and recap knowledge of the Germany topic. LO4: To explain the links between the conclusion of the Second World War and the origins of the Cold War. LO5: To describe differing political ideologies of the USA and USSR.
