Content

  • This is the final block on the Cold War topic. We started this topic half way through Spring block 1 (February 2024) so in order for this block to make sense, students would need to watch the previous recorded lessons. Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-1972. GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. This block we will continue our study of the Cold War by examining the transformation of the Cold War in the 1960s. We will cover key crises such as: The U2 crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis - arguably the closest the Cold War ever came to turning into a 'hot' war due to nuclear missiles. We will also study the Prague Spring and evaluate the similarities and differences between Czechoslovakia's attempt at moving away from the Soviet bloc to the similar events that took place in Hungary ten years previously. Finally, we will conclude this block by analysing the reasons for the the USSR and USA moving into a period of 'detente' in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

  • L01: To explain the impact of the U2 crisis in leading to a breakdown in relations between the USA and USSR. L02: To describe the events of the building of the Berlin Wall and explain the way this transformed the Cold War. L03: To identify the causes and consequences of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and evaluate how far this could be considered the most important Cold War crisis. L04: To compare the events of the Prague Spring with the Hungarian Rising and explain what the Prague Spring can reveal about the nature of the Cold War in the late 1960s. L05: To explain the key reasons for the period of ‘detente’.

Tutor

Lily .

GCSE History Tutor

Hello, I am Lily, the GCSE History teacher in the hub. I studied History at York University and my PGCE at Sussex, where I taught for 5 years full time in secondary schools. I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I have also mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded Specialist Leader of Education status for my work in primary History curriculums. Since relocating to North Yorkshire in 2020, and having my daughter, I have left the mainstream school setting and now teach online. As well as the History GCSE in the hub, I tutor GCSE and A-level History students. I am really passionate about making History a creative and rigorous discipline, full of debate and discussion. Students who study History at GCSE level and beyond should leave with a vast array of skills in handling sources and interpretations; analysing and evaluating opinions and texts; and crafting arguments. I aim to build students’ confidence and love for the subject by focusing on the human experience of the past, and also the many parallels and contrasts with the present. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the GCSE History groups in the hub and feel lucky to be part of such a positive educational space.

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”

“Our family are full time travellers and the hub is a life line for us. The children get to see and speak to adults who show a real interest in their learning and their lives. They get to pick lessons that they are interested in and have fun learning something new. The social hub was a real life line for us too. My 3 have made friends and love getting to chat to children and adults daily too. ”

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”
