  • BUILDS ON PREVIOUS BLOCKS. Description: Britain: Health and the people: c1000 to the present day. GCSE History is an engaging and challenging subject that is both interesting and useful for building skills such as: analysis, evaluation and written communication. We continue the second year of our course this block with our final topic: Britain: Health the People: c1000 to the present day. This course is about breadth, studying change over time through a theme. The theme we will be studying is 'health' with a focus on Britain over time. As part of the theme 'health' we will study beliefs about illness and disease, cures and remedies, knowledge and understanding, the role of institutions such as the Church and government. Additionally, we will consider the impact of factors such as industrialisation, war and the role of the individual. L/O: L01: To explain the key details of the 1848 and 1875 Public Health Acts. L02: To evaluate the impact of the Public Health Acts on the standard of Public Health in Britain. L03: To consolidate the Industrial section of the Health topic by evaluating the role of different factors, revising key knowledge and practicing exam questions. L04: To describe the discovery of penicillin and make links between development of other antibiotics. To explain the transformative effect of antibiotics on the treatment of infection. L05: To consider the role of WW1 and WW2 in the development of surgery. L06: To explain the key features of ‘modern’ medicine in Britain - such as the development of the NHS, pharmaceutical industry and alternative treatments.
