Content

  • PLEASE NOTE: Change of Time & Day. .......In the September block we will be looking at:- Japanese stories and crafts . In Japan Club this term, we will embark on a virtual journey into Japanese culture through traditional stories and engaging hands on activities. Many modern Japanese animations and comics have cultural references and refer to traditional stories so your children will be sure to make links and understand the stories they enjoy more deeply. This September, we'll learn about moon viewing traditions, make yummy onigiri and enjoy eating it together while learning and practising associated Japanese phrases and vocabulary. This term, we'll also will learn to read simple kanji characters and practice the art of 'shodo' calligraphy. We'll create haiku poems using Japanese language elements and play traditional Japanese games such as karuta to help remember new vocabulary.

  • Participants will: 1. deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and language through stories and discussion . 2. develop basic kanji reading skills. 3. experience 'shodo' calligraphy - practicing strokes and creating simple characters accurately. 4. learn about haiku structure and Japanese language elements, then compose haiku poems that reflect seasonal themes. 5. make onigiri.

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!
