  • Hidden Meanings in Literature

In Hidden Meanings in Literature, we become literary detectives!

Across five weeks, students will investigate how writers hide clues and deeper meanings within stories, poems and extracts. We will explore symbolism, connotations, imagery, atmosphere and themes, discovering how apparently ordinary details can reveal much more than we first realise.

Rather than simply asking 'what happens?', students will begin asking the much more interesting questions: 'why did the writer choose that?' and 'what might this suggest?'

Each week will combine accessible extracts, discussion, investigation and short analytical activities. Students will learn how to support their interpretations with evidence while recognising that literature does not always have one single "correct" meaning.

Perfect for curious readers, creative thinkers and anyone ready to start reading between the lines!

  • Course Objectives:

To explore how writers use connotations to create meaning beyond the literal definition of a word.
To identify symbolism and recurring motifs and explain what they might represent within a text.
To analyse how writers use imagery and sensory language to create atmosphere and influence the reader's response.
To identify a theme within a literary text and explain how the writer develops it through characters, events and ideas.
To develop and justify an independent interpretation, selecting relevant textual evidence and explaining how the writer's choices support it.

Amy L

English Tutor

Hi everyone! I’m Amy and I’ve been a private tutor since 2020.
I previously worked as a teacher where I taught in almost every year you can think of! I’ve worked in mainstream, independent and special schools.
I’m passionate about every child being able to access an education that is right for them and I’m excited to be a part of that!
During my time as a teacher, I worked with students with very high anxiety and as a result I’m an empathetic tutor and always aim for students to feel safe and secure in my lessons first and foremost. I also like to produce fun and engaging lessons that focus on topics that students are actually interested in!
I love travelling, reading and spending time at home with my baby, husband and dog! I also run my own greeting card company and have sold over 50,000 designs!
I am so excited to be joining the hub and to meet you all. I am a huge advocate for home education and I love what the £2 hub stands for! I hope to see in my lessons soon!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
