  • Behind the Headlines

This is a stand alone block but the descriptive writing skills from the previous block will be useful for our article writing!

In today’s fast-paced digital world, understanding news and media is more important than ever. This "Behind the Headlines" block aims to equip students with essential media literacy skills, teaching them to navigate news stories, identify bias and separate fact from opinion. Through engaging activities and real-world examples, students will learn to think critically, ask questions and even try their hand at writing their own unbiased news articles. This block is perfect for young readers and writers who want to understand the world with clarity and confidence!

  • Course Objectives:

Identify different types of news sources (e.g., newspapers, online news, social media) and understand their purposes and audiences.

Recognise bias, tone, and perspective in news articles, understanding how word choice can influence a reader’s perception.

Practise fact-checking techniques to evaluate the reliability of information and sources in news stories.

Write an objective news article by researching a current event, focusing on factual language, clarity, and neutrality.

Reflect on the role of media in shaping opinions and discuss the importance of responsible journalism

Tutor

Amy L

English tutor

Hi everyone! I’m Amy and I’ve been a private tutor since 2020. I previously worked as a teacher where I taught in almost every year you can think of! I’ve worked in mainstream, independent and special schools. I’m passionate about every child being able to access an education that is right for them and I’m excited to be a part of that! During my time as a teacher, I worked with students with very high anxiety and as a result I’m an empathetic tutor and always aim for students to feel safe and secure in my lessons first and foremost. I also like to produce fun and engaging lessons that focus on topics that students are actually interested in! I love travelling, reading and spending time at home with my baby, husband and dog! I also run my own greeting card company and have sold over 50,000 designs! I am so excited to be joining the hub and to meet you all. I am a huge advocate for home education and I love what the £2 hub stands for! I hope to see in my lessons soon!

There are no words I can say to describe just how incredible it is to have amazing teachers at our fingertips to teach my daughter (and all the other kids here). “The way you’ve structured The £2 Tuition Hub clearly comes from a deep and personal understanding of what anxious/ND children and young people need in order to be able to engage with and enjoy their learning. “....The Enterprising minds course has helped her to be able to do a business plan and her accounts. I/ we just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all in the hub. When we started HE 2 years ago we were thrown in it and wasn't sure that we would manage it. But the help all the Teachers have provided via the hub has really made this unfamiliar journey not only bearable, but enjoyable. ”
