  • Description: Inventors, Inventions and Engineers of the Industrial Revolution STEM Let's look at the main inventions of the Industrial Revolution and the importance of Britain. The children will also have chance to join in with STEM activities. Week 1: The Textile Industry and early water powered mills (the Flying Shuttle and Spinning Jenny inventions) - make a water wheel. Week 2: The Steam Engine and how it worked (a variety of STEM activities will be given to be done at home under parental supervision). Week 3: The Canals (let's construct a canal in a giant sand tray to explore the problems engineers faced) Week 4: This session will be taught by Doug - Iron and the Coke Blast Furnace - look at Ironbridge in Shropshire and construct a bridge with Doug Lloyd (he is a civil engineer as well as a £2 hub maths tutor!). Week 5: The Railway and Steamships. To understand the importance of the inventions of the Industrial Revolution. To use materials to construct your own water wheel, steam engine and bridge. To understand the problems that the textile and transport industry faced and how inventions were key to overcoming these problems.
