Biology: Ecosystems and Interdependence

This block works well as a stand-alone introduction to ecology and biodiversity but can also build on previous science blocks involving adaptation, habitats, or energy transfer. It also lays a strong foundation for future learning in environmental science, sustainability, and classification.

From deep rainforests to icy tundras, this Ecosystems and Interdependence block will take young biologists on a five-week journey through the living world!

We'll explore how different environments support life, how food chains and food webs keep everything in balance, and how animals are specially adapted to survive in extreme habitats.

Along the way, learners will meet real endangered species, investigate the impact of human activity, and discover how classification helps protect biodiversity.

With cut-and-stick food webs, colourful habitats, mini-debates, and real-world examples (like insect farming!), this course brings KS3 biology to life in a fun and accessible way.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students will be able to:

Describe what an ecosystem is and name biotic and abiotic factors

Construct food chains and webs, and explain predator–prey relationships

Understand how animals are adapted to different environments

Evaluate how human actions affect ecosystems and biodiversity

Use classification systems to group living organisms and explore their importance in conservation

Students will benefit from having:

Pen, paper, and colouring pencils or felt tips

Scissors and glue stick (for cut-and-stick activities)
