Content

  • Chemistry: Atoms and the Periodic Table

This block can be taught as a stand-alone introduction to chemistry, with no prior knowledge required. However, it builds naturally on previous learning about materials, states of matter, or basic particle theory. It sets the stage for future chemistry units, including bonding, reactivity, and chemical changes.

Dive into the fascinating world of atoms, elements, and the periodic table in this action-packed chemistry block! Students will discover what everything is made of, how substances combine to form new materials, and why elements are arranged the way they are on the periodic table.

From explosive alkali metals to the mysterious noble gases, this five-week adventure introduces the patterns, trends, and big ideas that underpin modern chemistry.

Whether you’re a future scientist or just curious about what’s inside your phone, this course will help you make sense of the building blocks of the universe - with colourful models, cool comparisons, and loads of “aha!” moments.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students will be able to:

Describe the basic structure of atoms and define elements and compounds

Understand how and why the periodic table is organised

Identify differences between metals and non-metals

Explain key properties and reactions of alkali metals (Group 1)

Compare halogens (Group 7) and noble gases (Group 0) in terms of properties and reactivity

    Specialist
    Resources Needed:

There will be a more detailed list at the beginning of the block, but here is a 'heads up' to get you started:

    Students may benefit from having:

    Pen, pencil, ruler, coloured pencils
Print-outs of the periodic table and other worksheets from the dashboard
Scissors and glue stick (for optional cut-and-stick classification tasks)
Access to a notebook or folder
Optional extension activities may involve simple at-home materials (e.g., marshmallows and toothpicks for atom models)

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”

Louise, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”
