Content

  • Physics: Energy Changes and Transfers

This block works well as a stand-alone introduction to energy but builds on prior learning from KS2 and early KS3 about heating and cooling, forces, and basic scientific investigations. It also lays the foundation for more advanced topics such as energy efficiency, power, and energy in chemical reactions.

From the food we eat to the electricity in our homes, energy is everywhere - and this exciting 5-lesson block helps KS3 students understand exactly how it works!

In this hands-on and practical topic, students will explore how energy is stored, transferred, and measured.

We'll investigate how insulation works, compare energy resources, calculate power usage at home, and even explore how machines help us do work more efficiently.

With clear diagrams, engaging activities, and real-life links, this unit gives learners a strong foundation in energy science - and a new way of seeing the world around them.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students will be able to:

Describe different types of energy stores and how energy is transferred between them

Explain how food provides energy and how that energy is measured

Understand heat transfer and how insulation reduces energy loss

Compare renewable and non-renewable energy resources and their environmental impact

Calculate power and energy costs in the home

Describe what is meant by work done, and explore how simple machines help reduce effort

    Specialist Resources Needed:

I will give a more detailed list of equipment required before the course starts, but here a 'heads-up' to get you going.

    Students may benefit from having:

    Pen, pencil, ruler, calculator

Scissors and glue stick (for cut-and-stick activities)

Access to printed worksheets from the dashboard

Household food packaging (labels) for Lesson 1 (optional)

    Notebook or science folder

Optional practical items (e.g. kitchen foil, cups, hot water) may be suggested for home investigations but are not essential.

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!

“So glad that I came across the £2 Tuition Hub by chance last year, it has had a huge impact on my child’s life. He has for the first time had access to varied, age-appropriate lessons, with fantastic teachers who always make him feel included and valued.”

Louise, parent

“As well as being amazed at the range of lessons available on the hub, I have been delighted to find that the teachers have all been not only knowledgeable, but so friendly, kind and encouraging to all the learners. The lessons are calm and non-stressful, just what my child needs. Thank you to everyone at the hub.”

Hub parent

“We have been studying with the hub for many years now and both my boys have really appreciated the variety of courses available and the wonderfully inspiring teachers you have. We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent

“Very grateful for all your hard work, and thankful for all your help during these 4 years (can't believe it's been so long) - you don't know and I can't express in words how much pressure you take of our shoulders with this amazing palette of classes that you offer.”

Cristiana, parent

“I've recommended so many people to the hub, you guys have revolutionised home ed for us. Literally. After building up our confidence with using the hub, I've actually been able to take on work based back out in the community while my daughter is at home studying. Thanks for everything you are doing! ”

Tina, parent

“A massive thankyou for all you do at the £2 hub, we have been with you from the start and seen you grow but this is the first time we have done GCSE exams with you, and with great results! Thanks ”

Hub parent

“After a year of mostly science and art, my child has recently started Creative Writing class. From the first lesson I was blown away by the quality of the teaching, the standard of work the children were submitting and the supportive environment of the group. The tutor has a fantastic rapport with her students and it is also so nice (and great for their self-confidence) to see the students give each other great feedback and encouragement.”
