Content

  • Physics: Electricity

This block can be studied as a stand-alone unit, with no prior knowledge required. However, it builds on any basic understanding of energy, materials, or simple circuits from KS2 or earlier KS3 science.

It also sets the foundation for future work on resistance, static electricity, and energy transfer in electrical appliances.

Spark curiosity and switch on scientific thinking in this exciting KS3 Electricity block!

Students will explore how circuits work, why some fail, and how we can model electricity using jelly beans and rope.

We'll investigate fruity batteries, troubleshoot real circuit faults, and even design our dream eco houses using parallel circuits.

With hands-on experiments, real-world applications, and role-play challenges (from trainee electrician to housing site manager!), this five-week journey turns volts, amps, and circuit diagrams into practical knowledge and problem-solving fun.

Perfect for curious learners who like to build, test, and experiment their way to understanding!

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students will be able to:

Identify circuit symbols and draw working diagrams

Explain how and why circuits may fail

Use models to describe how electricity flows and what voltage means

Measure voltage using a voltmeter and test citrus fruit batteries

Investigate current in series and parallel circuits

Apply knowledge to real-world scenarios, such as wiring a home or fixing faulty components

    Specialist
    Resources Needed:

I will give a detailed list equipment for each block prior, but here is a brief 'heads up' of some useful equipment: Recommended (but not all essential) items include:

    General:

Pen, paper, ruler Access to printable worksheets from the dashboard

    For practical sessions:

    Lesson 3 (Fruity battery):
    1 citrus fruit (lemon/lime/orange)
    1 copper strip or coin
1 zinc strip or galvanised nail
    2 crocodile clips
    2 wires
    Voltmeter (or alternative measuring tool)

    Lessons 4 & 5 (Circuits):
    Circuit wires
    Small bulbs
    Batteries + holders
    Crocodile clips
    Ammeters (if available)
Buzzer (optional for Dream House activity)
Shoe box or small cardboard box

I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
