  • Human Rights and
    Youth Justice

    In this block, learners will explore the fascinating world of human rights and the justice system for young people.

    We’ll look at the Human Rights Act and the ways it protects us in everyday life, from freedom of expression to the right to education.

    Learners will discover how and why the justice system treats young people differently to adults, examining youth courts, sentencing, and police powers.

    Real-life case studies will bring these issues to life, sparking debates on controversial topics and helping students understand how the law balances rights, responsibilities, and justice.

  • Course Objectives:

    To understand what human rights are and why they exist:

    We’ll explore the Human Rights Act 1998, focusing on the rights most relevant to young people, and investigate how these rights are applied in the UK.

    To examine how the justice system treats young people differently to adults:

    We’ll explore youth courts, sentencing options, and real-world cases that highlight the challenges of balancing punishment with rehabilitation.

    To investigate the powers of the police and the rights of young people when stopped or searched:

    We’ll analyse how these laws work in practice and debate whether they strike the right balance between safety and fairness.

    To evaluate real-life case studies involving young people and human rights issues:

    Learners will debate controversial examples, weighing up arguments about rights, responsibilities, and the role of the courts.

Business IGCSE, Law, Criminology Tutor

Hello! I’m Carla and I teach a variety of Secondary Social Science sessions in the Hub. These currently includes Business, Law and Criminology. I am a Freelance Educator who enjoys a variety of roles. My most recent role outside of the Hub has been a Deputy Headteacher which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I am also an Educational Advisor for Claire House and examiner with a leading exam board. I have almost 20 years’ teaching experience and have led the pastoral care of students for the vast majority of my career. I have vast experience of leading Alternative Provision within the secondary system and that is why I adore the Hub and our learners within it soooooo much. I am based close to my home city of Liverpool, have three children and two cats. I love music and always start my sessions with a song whilst everyone is joining. During my free time you will find me exploring the UK and France in our caravan. Hope to see you soon in one of my sessions.
