    A Guide to Tort Law

    Ever wondered when the law steps in to protect people, property, and peace of mind?

    You'll dive into real-world scenarios involving negligence, nuisance, occupiers’ liability, and even the classic Rylands v Fletcher rule. Learn how courts decide who owes a duty of care, what counts as a breach, and when someone is entitled to compensation - or even an injunction.

    Whether it’s psychiatric injury or pure economic loss, this course gives you the tools to analyse and evaluate legal responsibility through the lens of key cases, principles, and public policy.

  • Course Objectives:

    Understanding Duty of Care:

    Learners will be able to explain how a duty of care is established in negligence claims, using the Caparo test and the ‘neighbour principle’, and apply this understanding to real-life scenarios involving physical injury and property damage.

    Exploring Breach, Damage, and Causation:

    Learners will be able to analyse how the law determines whether a duty has been breached, assess the standard of care, and distinguish between factual and legal causation in determining liability.

    Liability Beyond Negligence:

    Learners will develop a basic understanding of torts beyond negligence, including occupiers’ liability, private nuisance, and the rule in Rylands v Fletcher, and will evaluate the fairness of imposing liability in these contexts.

Business IGCSE, Law, Criminology Tutor

Hello! I’m Carla and I teach a variety of Secondary Social Science sessions in the Hub. These currently includes Business, Law and Criminology. I am a Freelance Educator who enjoys a variety of roles. My most recent role outside of the Hub has been a Deputy Headteacher which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I am also an Educational Advisor for Claire House and examiner with a leading exam board. I have almost 20 years’ teaching experience and have led the pastoral care of students for the vast majority of my career. I have vast experience of leading Alternative Provision within the secondary system and that is why I adore the Hub and our learners within it soooooo much. I am based close to my home city of Liverpool, have three children and two cats. I love music and always start my sessions with a song whilst everyone is joining. During my free time you will find me exploring the UK and France in our caravan. Hope to see you soon in one of my sessions.
