  • M5: Marine Ecology Part 1

    This block is part of the CIE IGCSE Marine Science course and marks the beginning of the study of marine ecology.

    It builds on knowledge of seawater properties, marine organisms, and energy transfer in ecosystems. It is recommended that learners have completed Blocks 1–5 before starting this block. However, confident learners with a good understanding of ecological concepts from KS3 (e.g. habitats, populations, and environmental interactions) may enjoy this block as a stand-alone unit.

    This is where Marine Science meets the wild outdoors! Learners will explore how living things interact in the ocean, from bustling rock pools to vast sandy shores. This block introduces marine ecosystems, population dynamics, and ecological fieldwork skills, including how to estimate population size and measure abiotic factors.

    With simulated sampling, zone mapping, and ecosystem comparisons, students will start thinking like field ecologists: observing, recording, and understanding the delicate balance of life beneath the waves.

  • Course Objectives:

    Define marine ecosystems and give examples of different types

    Identify and describe abiotic and biotic factors in marine environments

    Describe how to estimate population size using methods such as quadrats and mark-recapture

    Explain the concept and significance of zonation on rocky shores

    Describe how organisms interact through competition, predation, and symbiosis

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:
