Content

  • M3 Marine Organisms
    (Part 1)

It is recommended that participants have studied units M1 & M2 of the IGCSE Marine Science Course.

In this unit, you’ll delve into the fascinating world of marine biology by comparing plant and animal cell structures and examining bacterial cells.

We’ll investigate cell organelles and their functions through diagrams and microscopy.

You’ll learn about the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction and discover how marine organisms are classified by shared features, using the binomial system.

We’ll explore the three domains, the main kingdoms of Eukarya, and characteristic traits of marine vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish) and invertebrates (crustacea, cnidaria, echinoderms, molluscs, annelids).

Finally, you’ll gain practical skills in measurement, magnification, drawing specimens, and creating dichotomous keys.

  • Course Objectives:

Compare the structures of plant and animal cells and describe bacterial cell structure.

Identify and explain the functions of organelles in plant, animal, and bacterial cells.

Distinguish between sexual and asexual reproduction.

Classify marine organisms based on shared features using the binomial system.

Describe the three domains and the main kingdoms of Eukarya.

Outline the characteristic features of marine vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish) and identify fish structures (operculum, scales, fins, lateral line, nares) and their functions.

Summarize the key traits of marine invertebrates: crustacea, cnidaria, echinoderms, molluscs, and annelids.

Observe and draw biological specimens using lenses, microscopes, or photographs, and convert measurements between cm, mm, and µm.

Use the magnification formula to calculate magnifications and sizes of structures.

Construct and apply dichotomous keys to classify organisms.
