  • M6: Human Influences on the Marine Environment (Part 1)

    Block 9

    This block is part of the CIE IGCSE Marine Science course and introduces the impact of human activity on the marine environment.

    It builds on learners’ understanding of ecosystems, organisms, and chemical properties of seawater.

    It is recommended that learners have completed units M1 - M5 before starting this block.

    However, those with a strong interest in environmental issues and a good understanding of marine ecosystems from KS3 may still access it as a stand-alone block.

    How are humans changing the ocean - and what can we do about it?

    In this powerful and thought-provoking block, learners investigate the causes and consequences of marine pollution.

  • From oil spills to plastic waste and sewage runoff, they’ll explore real-world case studies, examine the impact on marine life, and evaluate solutions being used to monitor, manage, and prevent damage.

    Expect lively discussions, practical investigations, and lots of critical thinking as we uncover how our actions ripple through the seas.

    Course Objectives:

    Identify the main sources and types of marine pollution

    Explain the impact of oil, plastic, and sewage pollution on marine ecosystems

    Describe how pollution can be monitored and managed

    Interpret real data relating to pollution and its effects

    Understand the role of public awareness and policy in reducing marine pollution

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:
