  • M2 Seawater

    This unit is part of a two-year IGCSE Marine Science course. While the unit can be taken on its own, it is recommended that students have completed Unit M1 beforehand to build a solid foundation for the material covered in Unit M2.

    Dive into the fascinating world of seawater in Unit M2!

    Explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gases through particle theory, understand how temperature affects kinetic energy, and examine changes of state like evaporation and condensation.

    Discover the water cycle, factors influencing evaporation, and investigate how temperature impacts solubility.

    Learn about salinity, seawater composition, and compare salinities across the Pacific Ocean, Baltic Sea, and Red Sea.

    We’ll also explore estuaries, where freshwater meets seawater, and conduct a hands-on investigation on ice melting and sea level.

  • Course Objectives:

    Describe the properties of solids, liquids, and gases using particle theory.

    Explain temperature as a measure of kinetic energy.

    Define and explain changes of state (evaporation, condensation, freezing, melting).

    Conduct a practical investigation on melting ice and sea level.

    Interpret the water cycle, focusing on evaporation and precipitation.

    Investigate the effect of temperature on solubility.

    Define salinity and factors influencing it (erosion, run-off, temperature, etc.).

    Compare salinities in different bodies of water.

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
