Content

  • M5: Marine Ecology
    (Part 2)

    Block 8

This block is part of the CIE IGCSE Marine Science course and continues the study of marine ecology introduced in Block 6. It explores more complex ecological concepts including succession, deep-sea zones, and species adaptations. It is recommended that learners have completed Units M1 - M5 (part 1) before starting this block.

However, learners with a solid understanding of ecosystems, habitats, and adaptations from KS3 may take it as a stand-alone block.

Why is the deep sea home to some of the strangest creatures on Earth?
How do coral reefs recover after destruction?

In this awe-inspiring block, learners explore the extreme zones of the ocean - from the sunlit shallows to the pitch-black depths.

  • They'll investigate ecological succession, unique adaptations to life without light, and discover how mangroves, coral reefs, and hydrothermal vents support vibrant ecosystems in harsh conditions.

Real-world case studies and interactive tasks make this a true deep dive into the wonders of marine life.

    Course Objectives:

Describe ecological succession in marine environments

Identify the characteristics of ocean zones (sunlight, twilight, midnight)

Explain the adaptations of organisms to deep-sea and intertidal conditions

Describe the structure and function of coral reef and mangrove ecosystems

Understand how environmental changes affect marine ecosystems

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.

I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.

My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.

Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:

👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors 👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists 👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers 👨🏻‍💻 Innovators 👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers 👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists 👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators

More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!
