  • M4: Nutrients and Energy

    Block 5

    This block is part of the CIE IGCSE Marine Science course and focuses on how energy and nutrients move through marine ecosystems. It builds directly on learners’ understanding of marine organisms and the physical and chemical properties of seawater. It is recommended that learners have completed Blocks 1–4 before starting this block. However, it may also be taken as a stand-alone unit by learners with a strong foundation in food webs, basic ecology, and nutrient cycles from KS3 science.

    Who eats whom in the ocean and why does it matter?

    In this lively and engaging block, learners will trace the flow of energy from sunlight to top predators and explore how vital nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are cycled through the marine environment.

    They’ll investigate food chains, food webs, and trophic levels, and learn how factors like temperature, light, and nutrients affect productivity in the ocean. With real-life data, creative ecosystem modelling, and plenty of interactive exploration, this block connects life in the sea to the energy and elements that power it.

  • Course Objectives:

    Describe the flow of energy through marine food chains and food webs

    Explain the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in the ocean

    Describe the cycling of nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus

    Understand the factors that affect productivity in different ocean regions

    Explain the role of photosynthesis in marine ecosystems

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
