Content

  • M5 - Marine ecology
    (Part 2)

This block builds on knowledge and concepts introduced in M1–M5 (Part 1), learners planning to complete the full IGCSE Marine Science course are strongly encouraged to study the previous blocks first. However, this block can also be studied as a stand-alone unit focused on practical ecology and fieldwork skills.

Key ecological concepts will be reviewed where necessary, making it suitable for learners who wish to develop their understanding of ecological investigations, data collection and exam-style practical questions.

How do marine scientists investigate ecosystems when they can't count every organism in the ocean?

In this practical-focused Marine Ecology block, students will develop the skills used by real ecologists to study marine environments and analyse ecological data.

Together we'll explore quadrat sampling, species richness, population estimates, line and belt transects, shore profiles, sediment analysis and abiotic factors. Although we won't be carrying out full fieldwork investigations during live lessons, students will learn how each technique works through demonstrations, worked examples and exam-style questions, with the option to try investigations independently with a grown-up if they wish.

With interactive Kahoot quizzes, practical demonstrations, data analysis and plenty of opportunities to apply knowledge to real ecological scenarios, this block is ideal for learners who want to build confidence in the practical skills assessed throughout IGCSE Marine Science.

  • Course Objectives:

By the end of this block, students should be able to:

Describe how ecologists estimate population size and species richness using sampling techniques.

Explain how quadrats are used to investigate the abundance and distribution of organisms.

Describe and compare line transects and belt transects.

Explain how species distribution changes across marine ecosystems.

Identify and measure important abiotic factors that influence ecosystems.

Describe how shore profiles can be measured and interpreted.

Explain how sediment size and particle characteristics can be investigated.

Describe methods used to measure the moisture content of sediments.

Select appropriate methods for investigating different marine ecosystems.

Present, interpret and analyse ecological data.

Evaluate ecological investigations and identify sources of error and limitations.

    Specialist Resources Needed:

Throughout the block, learners will be introduced to a range of ecological fieldwork equipment including quadrats, transects, clinometers, identification guides and sampling equipment.

These techniques will be demonstrated during lessons and linked to IGCSE examination questions. Learners are welcome to try some of the investigations independently with appropriate adult supervision, but this is entirely optional.

Worksheets and supporting resources will be available on the dashboard, and students can fully participate in the course by watching the demonstrations and engaging with the discussions and exam practice activities.

Tutor

Carrie Ann .

Science Tutor

My name is Carrie Ann Booth 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💥 and I teach Primary Science, KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry and IGCSE Marine Science.
I have a degree in Biochemistry with Science Communication and over 20 years of experience teaching science in schools, online, and through hands-on workshops and shows. Alongside teaching in the hub, I am also the founder of The Science Booth, where I bring science to life for thousands of children each year through explosive demos, practical investigations, and unforgettable learning experiences.
My teaching style is all about “serious science learning… but not too serious!” I believe children learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, get messy, explore ideas, and see the real-world magic of science for themselves. My lessons are energetic, engaging, and full of curiosity, creativity, and wow moments.
Science matters because it shapes the future. Today’s curious children could become tomorrow’s:
👩🏼‍🔬 Doctors
👨🏽‍🔬 Research Scientists
👩🏼‍🔧 Engineers
👨🏻‍💻 Innovators
👩🏾‍🚀 Space Explorers
👨🏼‍🔬 Marine Biologists
👩🏻‍💻 Technology Creators
More than anything, I want children to leave my sessions feeling confident, curious, and excited to learn. If we can inspire children to question, investigate, and think scientifically, those are skills they will carry with them for life… and who knows, we may even inspire a future Nobel Prize winner along the way!

Parent Comments

“I would like to say thank you for the service you provided, you have always been very helpful whenever I had any questions. Primarily you offer a great service, doing lessons online and watching the videos was a game changer for my daughter as she could watch them at home on her own schedule. Subsequently this has allowed her to take 2 additional GCSEs that she would not have done other wise. Thank you very much”

David, parent

“Thank you so much for everything!! You have been an absolute life saver. There was a time when I couldn't possibly imagine my son taking any GCSEs at all, and here we are ploughing through the past papers and sending him off to exams with a calm and confident son. Extraordinary! Thank goodness for you and your efforts to help kids like him - we will be eternally grateful.”

Ruth, parent

“Your support and guidance is always valuable and appreciated, keep it up! ”

Gina, parent

Louise, parent

“As well as being amazed at the range of lessons available on the hub, I have been delighted to find that the teachers have all been not only knowledgeable, but so friendly, kind and encouraging to all the learners. The lessons are calm and non-stressful, just what my child needs. Thank you to everyone at the hub.”

Hub parent

“We have been studying with the hub for many years now and both my boys have really appreciated the variety of courses available and the wonderfully inspiring teachers you have. We have done loads of courses, many of which have allowed my boys have successfully gained GCSEs and other qualifications like arts awards”

Katharine, parent

“I would like to say a huge Thank you for your incredible service. Such a brilliant concept and as an ex-teacher I'm very impressed with the quality of teaching, resources, well everything really! My 14year old is like a different child nowadays, wish I had deregistered him years ago in hindsight. Thank you!”

Claire, parent

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you do at the Hub. It is such a Godsend for us. Our kids are enjoying their lessons, the live interaction with other kids and the lovely, lovely teachers. Where did you find such wonderful, knowledgeable but incredibly patient people?! It’s such a relief our kids can get a tailor made, good quality, British style education even as we live out this slightly crazy life here in the Mexican jungle! Thank you very much to all involved.”

Carolyn, parent
