  • M2: Sea Water (Part 2)

    Block 3

    This block is part of the CIE IGCSE Marine Science course and continues the study of seawater, focusing on solubility, density, and ocean circulation.

    It is recommended that learners have completed Block 1 and Block 2 before starting this block.

    However, it can also be taken as a stand-alone unit by learners with a strong understanding of basic chemistry and an interest in the movement of water in the ocean.

    Prior KS3 science knowledge of gases, solutions, and temperature is assumed.

    Why do some parts of the ocean sink while others swirl at the surface?

    In this exciting follow-up to Block 2, students discover how temperature, salinity, and density work together to move entire masses of seawater across the globe.

  • From the oxygen that dissolves into polar seas to the powerful conveyor belt of thermohaline circulation, learners will conduct hands-on experiments and data analysis to explore what really drives ocean movement.

    Expect fizzing, floating, and plenty of “aha!” moments as we make the invisible visible.

    Course Objectives:

    Describe the solubility of gases in seawater

    Explain how temperature and pressure affect gas solubility

    Understand how density is influenced by temperature and salinity

    Describe the formation and role of ocean currents

    Distinguish between surface and deep ocean currents

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
