Content

  • M2: Sea Water (Part 1)

    Block 2

    This block is part of the IGCSE Marine Science course and builds on content introduced in Block 1.

    It moves from a focus on Earth's ocean structure to exploring the chemical and physical properties of seawater.

    While it is recommended that Block 1 is studied first, this block can also be taken as a stand-alone unit by learners with a general interest in ocean chemistry.

    It also assumes prior KS3 science knowledge, such as the water cycle, states of matter, and pH.

    What makes seawater salty?
    Why does it taste different around the world?

    In this block, learners take a closer look at the water that covers over 70% of our planet.

  • From exploring the global water cycle to testing the pH and salinity of seawater samples, this hands-on block will help students uncover the chemistry that drives life in the oceans.

    They'll dive into particle theory, discover how salinity changes with climate and location, and begin to think like marine chemists as they investigate the invisible ingredients of the sea.

    Course Objectives:

    Describe the water cycle and its main components

    Use particle theory to explain the properties of water

    Describe how temperature and pH vary in different marine environments

    Understand what salinity means and how it is measured

    Describe the global variation of salinity in the ocean

My name is Carrie Ann! I teach Primary and GCSE science in the hub. I have a degree in Biochemistry and over 16 years science teaching to my name, both in schools and the outdoor classroom. I am obsessed with making science fun for children! I want to inspire children to become scientists. Why? Because science is SO important. We need tomorrow’s: 👩‍🔬Doctors 👨‍🔬Research Scientists 👩‍🔬Engineers 👨‍🔬Inventors 👩‍🔬Nano technology experts If we can spark your child’s imagination to ask, explore, question and investigate; this becomes of a life-long skill which could lead down the path of an amazing science career. Who knows we might even have a future Nobel Prize winner?!
