Content

  • Study of Film and Music Video

    Blocks 7 and 8 should be viewed prior to starting Block 9.

    This is Block 9 of Media Studies, which focuses on a range of media texts, both print and digital. We will look at their history and development including advances in technology and changes in the social roles of individuals and groups in society reflecting on the influences that have shaped media as it is today. So far, we have studied newspapers and magazines, television programmes and radio programmes over six blocks. We learned about their history, how meaning is conveyed by media texts, their production values and the roles of those involved in media.

  • In Blocks 7 and 8, we began our film study, looking at how a film is studied and analysed, including the subject terminology used and the production values involved. The film we are studying is “Back to the Future”. You do not need to have done Blocks 1 to 6 but should do Blocks 7 and 8 before starting this one.

    We will complete the film study during this block and then move on to music video, which uses many similar cinematographic techniques to films, but has its own specific considerations too.

    Course Objectives:

    To learn about media history, how meaning is conveyed by media texts, their production values and the roles of those involved in media relating specifically to films and videos.

I’m Diane and I teach a variety of Secondary English sessions in the Hub, which currently includes Classic Literature, Modern Literature, Shakespeare, GCSE English Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I’m a recently retired Secondary Head of English, a current examiner of many years’ experience with some of the major exam boards and I run my own tuition business. I have been teaching since 2004. I’m now based in Somerset, originally from the Midlands but I lived in Cornwall for many years.
