About this course

  • £10.00
  • Tutor: Hannah Y, 5 sessions
  • Age: approx 8+
  • Description: In this block we will be using the micro:bit's built in magnetometer for a variety of purposes. We'll turn our micro:bit into a compass that tells you which direction you are facing. We'll measure the magnetic fields of neodymium magnets. And we'll make a magnetic alarm that rings whenever someone opens the door! There will be the option to use block coding and / or python for these projects. You will need: * A desktop or laptop computer with bluetooth. * A second screen on which you can follow the lesson while you are coding on your main computer. * A micro:bit, USB cable and battery pack. (Micro:bit starter kit) * Strong neodymium magnets * A ruler that shows millimetres * 3 x alligator clip cables * Self-adhesive pads * Speaker for micro:bit (Optional) NB: We will not be using 'Scratch' coding at all in this project. L/O: In this physical computing / STEAM project we'll find useful applications for coding! Learn how to make your own compass by coding your micro:bit to tell you which direction you are facing using the magnetometer. Explore how to use the magnetometer to sense the presence of a magnet and even do some science by measuring magnetic field strength. Make and code a magnetic alarm that rings whenever someone opens the door. (And then work out how to 'break in' without triggering the alarm!) Compare block coding to Python using 'MakeCode'. Invent your own application for the micro:bit magnetometer!
