Content

  • PLEASE NOTE: Change of Day & Time. Design & make games. (It would be helpful if your child has some experience of coding and/or micro:bit but it's quick to pick up so it's OK if they haven't joined previous blocks). This term will be series of five engaging lessons where children will explore physical computing using the micro:bit through fun, hands-on projects. In this block, we'll design & make simple games while at the same time enhancing their understanding of circuits & learning to code. These lessons will teach fundamental coding skills, problem-solving, & the principles of circuit design in a fun, interactive environment. Participants will need a micro:bit starter kit, some crocodile clip leads & other materials such as foil & cardboard from which they will make their game designs. If you don't already have a micro:bit or need another one, kits will be available to order from storysteam.com/buy-a-kit

  • 1. Basic Coding Concepts Objective: Introduce children to fundamental coding principles, including loops, conditionals, variables, & event handling. 2. Problem-Solving Skills Objective: Enhance critical thinking & problem-solving abilities through debugging & iterative testing of their projects. 3. Physical Computing Objective: Learn the principles of physical computing by integrating the micro:bit with external materials to create interactive projects. 4. Build Interactive Games Objective: Create interactive games that combine coding & physical computing, fostering creativity & application of learned skills. 5. Creativity & Innovation Objective: Design & customise their games using creative problem-solving skills. By the end of these lessons, participants will have a solid foundation in coding, physical computing, & game development, equipped with the skills to continue exploring & creating with technology.

Hannah Y

STEAM, Coding, Lego & JapanTutor

Hello! I’m Hannah – the founder of Story STEAM – inspiring your children in all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Coding and Lego! So, a little bit about me… Since completing my BEd Primary Studies (hons) with a specialism in Design Technology, I’ve been a teacher (Reception to Year 6) for over 20 years. In between those 20+ years, I moved to Nara, Japan to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) programme where I taught English as an additional language to middle-schoolers and adults for 3 years. On returning to live in the UK, I was given responsibility for English and ICT/Computing in the school I worked in. Fast forward to 2020 and remote teaching planted a seed in my mind. During the lockdowns, I spent time reflecting and thinking about what children are not getting at school that I could bring to them online. Story STEAM was born! My son Tomi loves helping with my classes – testing out ideas – especially with coding and micro:bit! Children need time to invent and be creative; it’s good for their mental health. Through STEAM, Coding and Lego Club activities, I hope to give children the opportunity to create while using maths, learning about science, technology, engineering and most importantly – HAVE FUN!

“The way you’ve structured The £2 Tuition Hub clearly comes from a deep and personal understanding of what anxious/ND children and young people need in order to be able to engage with and enjoy their learning. I’d honestly be lost without your work, so big thanks to you and the rest of your team. ”

Laura, Parent

“....The Enterprising minds course has helped her to be able to do a business plan and her accounts. I/ we just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all in the hub. When we started HE 2 years ago we were thrown in it and wasn't sure that we would manage it. But the help all the Teachers have provided via the hub has really made this unfamiliar journey not only bearable, but enjoyable. ”

Ruth, Parent

“We have been taking part in the BSL lessons and the other day had great fun finger spelling while shopping. Two of my children have dyslexia with T being more severe, he hates and refuses spellings. Along comes BSL and he’s loving spellings!” ”

Holly, Parent

“I can’t thank you enough for starting this group Amy. You gave me back my happy (not so little anymore) boy. Thanks to this group he’s realised he’s not the stupid, naughty kid that school made him believe he was. His sister is on school holidays and he’s doing recorded lessons by choice. Xxxx ”
